Introduction to Tea Needles

A tea needle is pin-shaped and used to clear the spout of a teapot, picking out blocked tea leaves and stems to ensure a smooth pour. There is also another type of tea needle specifically designed for breaking apart compressed tea cakes, such as Pu-erh tea cakes. These are usually made of metal and are not used for Taiwanese tea. This article introduces the first type of tea needle.

As tea leaves expand inside the teapot, they can sometimes clog the spout when pouring, resulting in an uneven flow. Because teapot spouts are usually very small and hard to clean, and using your hands raises hygiene concerns, the tea needle was created to solve this problem. Common materials for tea needles include wood, bamboo, metal, and plastic, with bamboo being the most common.

When choosing the right tea needle, the main consideration is your teapot. If your teapot rarely gets clogged with leaves, you might not need one. If it does clog, you’ll want to select a tea needle based on the size and length of the spout. Before buying, make sure it fits your needs. Additionally, some tea needles feature a tea pick on the other end, which you can also look for if needed.
