The SunMoon Lake tea region is located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan, primarily surrounding the SunMoon Lake Scenic Area at an altitude between 600 and 750 meters. As Taiwan’s premier black tea production hub, its teas are marketed and sold under the “SunMoon Lake Black Tea” name.
Yuchi Township has records of harvesting black tea dating back to 1697. The black tea grown here is of exceptional quality, and by the 1940s, it was a mainstay of Taiwan’s tea exports, reaching an annual export volume of 1,000 tons. Following the 1950s, shifts in government policy and tea-drinking trends caused production to drop sharply to less than 10% of its peak, though cultivation never completely stopped.
In recent years, black tea has made a strong comeback in the Taiwanese tea market. Thanks to its abundant output, outstanding quality, and thriving local tourism, the SunMoon Lake tea region is once again capturing widespread attention. Today, the primary tea varieties cultivated here include Taiwan Tea No. 18 (Ruby), Assam, Taiwan Tea No. 21 (Hongyun), and native wild mountain tea.
