Green Tea for Cavity Prevention

Many people struggle with cavities. To prevent tooth decay, aside from brushing after meals and getting regular dental checkups, drinking green tea regularly can also help. Green tea contains fluoride, which helps form a protective layer on tooth enamel, safeguarding teeth against acid erosion and preventing cavities.

The main component of teeth is calcium. When calcium encounters acids in food, it breaks down into calcium ions, causing teeth to dissolve and cavities to form. Fluoride can bind with calcium to enhance teeth’s resistance to acid, which is why some toothpastes add fluoride. Since green tea contains fluoride, it offers a similar cavity-fighting effect.

Besides fluoride preventing cavities, green tea also contains catechins, which inhibit the growth of streptococci and other bacteria, helping to reduce oral bacteria, prevent cavities, and maintain oral hygiene. Drinking green tea regularly in daily life is very effective for preventing cavities and maintaining dental and oral health.

When using green tea to prevent cavities, unsweetened green tea works best. Sweetened green tea offers the same benefits, but remember to brush your teeth afterward and avoid excessive calorie intake. Also, avoid steeping the tea for too long to keep it from becoming too strong, which can stain teeth yellow. If green tea isn’t available, oolong tea also provides cavity-preventing benefits.
