Why We Won’t Be Buying 2022 HuaGung Ding and Dayuling Winter Tea

People have been asking when the HuaGung summit and Dayuling teas will be available. The HuaGung summit harvest wrapped up in September, and I neither tasted nor bought any. Dayuling harvest started a few days ago, and barring any surprises, we won’t be buying any either—so tea lovers don’t need to keep waiting.

The wholesale price for HuaGung summit and Dayuling teas starts at NT$5,000, with higher grades going from NT$7,000 to NT$8,000. With costs like that, the retail price has to be over NT$10,000. Let’s be honest: unless it’s of legendary, martial-arts-master quality, or some bizarre, unorthodox anomaly, why on earth would anyone spend over NT$10,000 instead of just buying award-winning tea from Renai Township?

Suppose I brought some in, and you bought it only to find out it wasn’t worth NT$10,000—or worse, couldn’t even beat Malieba LongFengXia. Would you ever buy tea from me again? Definitely not! So unless the quality is mind-blowing, or I’m just looking to make a quick buck off you once and never again, I won’t be stocking Dayuling tea this year.

One last time: the total production of Dayuling winter tea is less than 900 kg. With supplies this scarce, tea farmers aren’t going to sell cheap. Genuine, single-origin Dayuling tea commands a wholesale price of at least NT$5,000 from the origin. Please stop asking if a batch priced at NT$3,000 per 600 g is the real deal.
