Pu-erh is a post-fermented dark tea, and its brewing method differs from black, green, and oolong teas. Avoid using standard oolong brewing methods for Pu-erh, otherwise, the flavor will be compromised, and you won’t fully experience its true taste and value.
- Break up the tea: Use a tea knife to gently pry the tea cake from the center, keeping the shape as intact as possible. Letting the loosened leaves rest for a few days before brewing will enhance the flavor.
- Teapot: Choose a medium to large teapot. The amount of tea leaves should fill about one-fifth (20%) of the pot.
- Water temperature: Brew right after the water comes to a boil. 100°C is the ideal temperature.
- Steeping time: The initial brew takes about 2 minutes. Pour the brewed tea into a tea pitcher (fairness cup) and do not let it steep for too long. For the second and subsequent infusions, increase the time by 30 seconds per brew.
- Teaware: Porcelain is best, followed by pottery. Avoid using insulated flasks or thermal mugs, as they will diminish the flavor of the tea.
