Ruili is located in Meishan Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan, and is part of the Alishan Scenic Area. Originally cultivated with crops such as bamboo shoots, betel nuts, jelly figs, and plums, tea was introduced here thirty years ago. Unexpectedly, the quality received high praise, and Ruili tea has since gradually become a representative local crop.
Why is Ruili tea so exceptional that residents replaced their betel nut groves and vegetable gardens with tea plants? The secret lies in its history as a Chinese fir forest, leaving the soil rich in accumulated organic matter, which yields lush and fragrant tea leaves. Combined with the high-mountain climate characterized by heavy morning and evening fogs, the crafted Ruili Oolong tea boasts extraordinary quality and is deeply loved by consumers.
In addition to the picturesque tea plantations, Ruili boasts many popular attractions, including Yuntan Waterfall, Swallow Cliff, Millennium Bat Cave, and the Green Tunnel, all beloved by visitors. With the influx of tourists, the number of visitors to the Ruili area has steadily grown, which has indirectly made Ruili tea even more famous.
Next time you visit Chiayi, be sure to take a detour to Ruili. Aside from taking in the local scenery, you can also enjoy a great cup of Ruili tea, making for a truly worthwhile journey. If driving, take the Meishan Interchange and follow County Highway 162 甲, Township Road 154, and County Highway 166 to arrive. Buses are also available from Chiayi Railway Station.
