Jiuqu Hongmei tea, also known as Jiuqu Hong or Jiuqu Black Tea, is produced in Zhoupu Township, Xihu District. It is characterized by its slender, tightly knotted, hook-like strips, dark and lustrous appearance with abundant pekoe. When brewed, it releases a fragrant aroma with a red hue reminiscent of red plum blossoms. Beloved for its unique character, it is a classic among Chinese Gongfu black teas.
Origin and Characteristics of Jiuqu Hongmei Black Tea
The primary production area of Jiuqu Hongmei is located in the Hubu, Shangbao, Dailing, Zhangyu, Fengjia, Lingshan, Shejing, Renqiao, Shangyang, and Xiayang areas of Zhoupu Township, Xihu District, Hangzhou. Dawushan produces the highest quality, considered top-grade; the “Hubu goods” from Shangbao, Dailing, Fengjia, and Zhangyu rank second; while the “Sanqiao goods” from Shangyang, Xiayang, and Renqiao are considered lower grade. Dawushan yields the finest quality. Located near the Qiantang River, the Xihu area features frequent river mists and shorter sunshine hours, leading to slower tea growth and imparting distinct characteristics to Jiuqu Hongmei tea.
Production Method
The production process of Jiuqu Hongmei is meticulous and complex. Spring tea harvested around Guyu is the best, ideally consisting of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves. Rain-damaged, diseased, and old leaves are avoided during picking, followed by a rigorous sorting process before production begins.
The process involves three main steps: pan-firing (kill-green), fermentation, and baking. While pan-firing and baking are similar to other Gongfu teas, the key lies in fermentation. Adequate fermentation is essential for the tea leaves to develop a Hongxiang and a color resembling red plum blossoms. If under-fermented, the tea will retain a grassy note, resulting in inferior quality and a lower grade.
Flavor Profile of Jiuqu Hongmei
The flavor of Jiuqu Hongmei black tea is a major highlight. The liquor is a beautiful red, exuding a fragrant aroma with subtle notes of floral and honey. On the palate, it is full-bodied and sweet, with a lingering aftertaste. Its flavor is not as intense as ordinary black teas, yet it reveals a unique charm through its delicacy, which is precisely why it is so beloved.
How to Brew Jiuqu Hongmei
Zisha clay pots, pottery pots, or porcelain pots are all suitable. Use spring water or stream water. Water temperature should be 95 to 100 degrees Celsius. The tea-to-water ratio is 1:50, meaning 2 grams of tea for a 100ml teapot. Steep for 3 minutes for the first infusion, adding 1 minute to each subsequent infusion.
