Spring is widely considered the finest season for tea harvesting. Spring tea can be categorized into “Mingqian tea,” “Yuqian tea,” and “Guyu tea.” These three teas vary in harvest time, quality, and flavor profile. So, what sets them apart?
Mingqian Tea: Limited Harvest, Most Prized
“Mingqian tea” refers to tea picked before the Qingming Festival (around April 5th on the solar calendar). Due to cooler early spring temperatures, tea plants grow slowly, yielding tender buds packed with rich compounds. This results in a fresh, crisp taste. Because the harvest window is brief and yields are low, it commands the highest price.
Yuqian Tea: A Balance of Quality and Yield
“Yuqian tea” refers to tea harvested after the Qingming Festival but before the Guyu solar term (around April 20th). Compared to Mingqian tea, Yuqian tea yields a larger harvest. The leaves harvested during this window are slightly more mature—less delicate than Mingqian, but richer, fuller-bodied, and able to withstand multiple infusions. With a higher yield, it is priced more affordably, making it an ideal choice for balancing quality, quantity, and value.
Guyu Tea: The Final Stage of Spring Harvest
“Guyu tea” refers to tea picked after the Guyu solar term (around April 20th), marking the final flush of spring tea. As temperatures rise, tea leaves grow more rapidly and expand in size. Tea harvested during this period is generally less delicate than Mingqian tea and can carry a touch more astringency. It is typically considered the most affordable among spring teas.
Comparing the Three Spring Teas
| Harvest Time | Mingqian is harvested earliest, followed by Yuqian, with Guyu being the latest. |
| Leaf Condition | Mingqian leaves are the most tender; Yuqian leaves are slightly more mature; Guyu leaves are the largest and prone to slight astringency. |
| Flavor Profile | Mingqian tea is fresh and crisp with a delicate sweetness; Yuqian tea is smooth and full-bodied; Guyu tea offers a bolder, richer taste. |
| Price & Rarity | Mingqian has low yield and supreme quality, making it the most expensive; Yuqian offers a mid-range option; Guyu yields high quantities at budget-friendly prices. |
Mingqian tea, Yuqian tea, and Guyu tea each have their own unique characteristics. Mingqian tea is the most prized, Yuqian tea offers a great balance of quality and yield, and Guyu tea yields plentiful harvests with a rich, bold flavor. Whichever you choose, all three are wonderful ways to experience spring tea. (The three photos above show Mingqian, Yuqian, and Guyu tea, in that order.)
