Introduction to Tea Saucers

A tea saucer, also known as a tea dish, is generally larger when referred to as a saucer and smaller when referred to as a tea dish, though they serve essentially the same function. The primary purpose of a tea saucer is to create a barrier between your hand and the teacup, preventing burns from hot tea. Additionally, when serving tea to guests, using a saucer makes the process much more convenient and hygienic.

Freshly brewed tea is inevitably hot to the touch, and this handy accessory was created precisely to avoid that issue. In fact, similar small trays are used not only for tea but also for coffee and soups. Because teacups for loose-leaf tea mostly lack handles, making them feel much hotter, the use of tea saucers is especially common.

Tea saucers come in ceramic and wooden materials. While wood offers better insulation, ceramic saucers are more commonly used due to considerations of cleanliness and aesthetics. Categorized by size, common types include tea trays, tea saucers, and small dishes. Tea trays are typically used for serving multiple cups of hot drinks across a distance to guests. Traditional tea brewing usually involves fewer people and takes place right at the tea table, making individual tea saucers and small dishes much more common.

How to Choose a Tea Saucer

Although wooden saucers offer better insulation, ceramic saucers actually provide adequate heat protection and are much easier to clean. Unless you have specific preferences, ceramic saucers should be your first choice.

Tea saucers should match your teacups, ideally being just the right size. Additionally, their color and design should coordinate well. Once placed on the saucer, the teacup should remain stable and not easily slip, otherwise, liquid can easily spill and go to waste.
