Characteristics of Lishan Tea

Lishan tea is grown at the highest altitude among Taiwan’s high mountain teas. Authentic Lishan tea generally sells for upwards of NT$2,000 per 600 g on the market, with top grades fetching over NT$10,000, and demand constantly outpaces supply. What exactly makes Lishan tea so unique that everyone who tries it keeps longing for more?

Sweet and smooth: The defining characteristic of Lishan tea is its sweet and smooth taste. With the tea gardens situated between 1,600 and 2,500 meters above sea level, snow and frost are common during winter and spring, and diurnal temperature swings of 20°C are frequent. Growing in such cold temperatures with wide temperature variations, Lishan tea leaves develop low bitterness and high pectin content, resulting in a naturally sweet and smooth cup.

Distinct floral aroma: Due to its high altitude, the aroma of Lishan tea differs from teas grown in other regions. Some notes resemble osmanthus, while others hint at white champak, creating a captivating experience. Coupled with the abundance of Lishan apples and honey pears, fruit trees often sit right alongside the tea fields, infusing the leaves with subtle fruity undertones that make each sip delightful.

Beyond its sweet, smooth character and unique floral aroma, another signature trait of Lishan tea is its elusive “mountain Yun” (mountain rhythm). Nurtured year-round by crisp alpine winds, the tea carries a refreshing, cool profile that is faint yet lingering—truly one of a kind.
