Golden Flower Fuzhuan Pu-erh Tea is a unique category of tea that combines the distinct characteristics of Golden Flower Fuzhuan tea and Pu-erh tea. Fuzhuan tea belongs to the dark tea (heicha) family. During its production, a “fahua” (fermentation/flower-inducing) process naturally cultivates a beneficial fungus called Eurotium cristatum, commonly known as “golden flowers” (jin hua). Applying this specialized technique to Pu-erh tea production creates Golden Flower Fuzhuan Pu-erh Tea.
The Origins and Production Craft of Golden Flower Fuzhuan Tea
Golden Flower Fuzhuan Tea is essentially Anhua Fuzhuan brick tea. During the Ming Dynasty, merchants from Jingyang, Shaanxi transported tea leaves from the Anhua region in Hunan to the borderlands for trade. Along the way, they discovered that under specific temperature and humidity conditions, the tea bricks would naturally grow a fungus known as “golden flowers”—Eurotium cristatum. Initially, this mold-like appearance was mistaken for spoilage, and large batches of tea were discarded. Later, local farmers brewed the discarded tea and found it to be exceptionally smooth, rich, and aromatic. This marked the origin of Golden Flower Fuzhuan tea.
As techniques advanced, people realized that these golden flowers only appear under precise temperature and humidity conditions. Mastering this knowledge led to the development of the “fahua” (flower-inducing) craft, which encourages Anhua dark tea to bloom with abundant golden flowers. Dark tea infused with golden flowers offers numerous benefits, including reduced bitterness and astringency, a deeper and smoother flavor, and a pleasant aroma. Legend also has it that the Eurotium cristatum in the golden flowers is beneficial for digestive health.
Golden Flower Fuzhuan Pu-erh Tea: A Fusion of Two Dark Tea Techniques
Pu-erh tea and Golden Flower Fuzhuan tea both belong to the dark tea category, renowned for their robust flavors and rich aged aromas. Some Pu-erh tea producers discovered that the fahua technique of Fuzhuan tea could also be applied to Pu-erh tea to further elevate its flavor profile, leading them to introduce this method in the production of Pu-erh tea bricks (and less commonly in tea cakes). This combination makes Golden Flower Fuzhuan Pu-erh Tea a truly uniquely flavored option.
