Are White Spots on Tea Leaves Mold? How to Tell if Tea is Moldy

When drinking tea, many people might notice white spots or fuzz on the surface of the leaves, raising concerns that the tea has gone moldy. In fact, white patches on tea leaves don’t always mean mold; sometimes they are tender buds—commonly known as pekoe or trichomes—which are a sign of high-quality tea rather than mold. However, white fuzz can sometimes indicate actual mold, and in such cases, the tea should not be consumed. Here is how to distinguish between the different types of white appearances on tea leaves:

Are White Spots on Tea Leaves Mold? Some Are Pekoe, Not Mold!

First of all, the white fuzz on tea leaves is actually a good thing. These are trichomes found exclusively on young, tender buds, commonly seen in white tea, green tea, and oolong tea. In Taiwan, they are most frequently seen in Oriental Beauty tea. Generally, the presence of these trichomes indicates that the tea leaves are very tender. When brewed, these teas release a wonderful, distinctive aroma. Moldy white fuzz, on the other hand, is usually accompanied by a strange, musty, or foul odor.

How to Tell if Tea is Moldy

As mentioned earlier, moldy tea usually gives off a damp, moldy smell, whereas good tea emits a natural tea fragrance. Additionally, moldy tea may have white, gray, or even greenish mold spots or fuzz on the surface, and the leaves appear dull. Good tea should be dry and easily crushed when firmly squeezed. Damp and moldy tea may feel soft, mushy, or sticky to the touch. You can also try blowing a strong puff of air at the leaves: moldy white fuzz will easily blow away, while natural tea trichomes are firmly attached and not easily blown off.

A whitish appearance on tea leaves doesn’t automatically mean mold; it’s very likely just the natural “trichomes” of the tea. However, if there are off-odors, mold spots, or changes in color and texture, you need to pay close attention. Storing tea in a dry place and checking it regularly can effectively prevent mold and ensure drinking safety.
