Minhong Gongfu Black Tea, also known simply as Minhong or Minhong Gongfu, originates from Fujian Province and is a fully fermented black tea. Along with Lapsang Souchong and Keemun, Minhong Gongfu is hailed as one of China’s top three black teas. Minhong encompasses varieties such as Zhenghe Gongfu, Tanyang Gongfu, and Bailin Gongfu, each with its own distinct characteristics and dedicated following.
Minhong is the collective term for Zhenghe Gongfu, Tanyang Gongfu, and Bailin Gongfu. Zhenghe Gongfu is produced in Zhenghe County; Tanyang Gongfu in Fuan City; and Bailin Gongfu in Fuding City. They share common traits: a dark, lustrous appearance with golden-tipped hairs, and a smooth, rich, and sweet flavor profile.
- Zhenghe Gongfu: Made primarily from Zhenghe Da Bai (Large White) tea trees, as well as some small-leaf varieties. Its most unique feature is a subtle hint of violet in the aroma, making for a truly distinctive tasting experience.
Tanyang Gongfu: Ideal for drinking straight. It offers a smooth, rich, and sweet taste with a long-lasting aroma. It can also be enjoyed with fresh milk, honey, or simple syrup for a delightful alternative flavor.
Bailin Gongfu: Mostly crafted from small-leaf black tea varieties, featuring tighter, slender, and slightly curved strips with darker leaves. Bailin is characterized by its mellow flavor and fresh sweetness.
Among these three Gongfu black teas, Zhenghe Gongfu currently boasts the largest production volume and the most stable quality. Tanyang Gongfu and Bailin Gongfu have also seen rising production in recent years due to their growing popularity.
