Fenghuang Town began tea cultivar breeding over a century ago. Today, as many as 79 natural aroma types remain, and in 1996, the top ten aroma types of Fenghuang Dancong were officially established. Among them, Milan Xiang Dancong is named for its combination of rich honey aroma and orchid fragrance, and it is widely considered the finest Fenghuang Dancong variety.
Fenghuang Milan Xiang Dancong: A Honey-Scented Tea Bred from Shuixian
Milan Xiang Dancong is one of the top ten floral and honey aroma types, originally native to Fenghuang Town, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province. The local Shuixian tea trees have long been propagated sexually, meaning each plant has its own unique characteristics. Through selective breeding and asexual propagation via cutting, the Milan Xiang Dancong we know today was ultimately developed. The resulting Milan Xiang Oolong features robust, tightly twisted, and straight tea leaves with a light golden-brown color. When brewed, it has a glossy sheen with a distinct sweet potato “honey note” and orchid fragrance, offering a high and lingering aroma.
Among Milan Xiang Dancong teas, those harvested from old bushes (laocong) aged 70 years and above are of the highest quality. Known for an elegant, long-lasting honey note and a special “rich honey and subtle orchid” character, it leaves the mouth full of fragrance long after drinking. Centennial high-mountain old bush Milan Xiang is an even rarer treasure, commanding prices of tens of thousands of Chinese Yuan per 500 g.
A Popular Tea: Milan Xiang Oolong
For the past 20 years, Milan Xiang Oolong has been almost the most popular tea among Fenghuang Dancong, praised as the finest aroma type in Dancong tea due to its unique honey and orchid fragrance. Although its spotlight has been somewhat overshadowed in recent years by the viral “Duck Shit Fragrance Dancong” (Ya Shi Xiang), many people still deeply adore its distinct orchid aroma.
