Many tea lovers often ask: “Why is JinXuan tea cheaper?” “Why does it cost only a third of Qingxin Oolong?” “Is it because the quality is poor?” In reality, a lower price tag on tea leaves doesn’t necessarily mean lower quality. Here is an explanation of the main reasons behind the affordable price of JinXuan tea.
Reasons Why JinXuan Tea Is More Affordable
Compared to Qingxin Oolong and Tieguanyin, JinXuan tea offers incredible value for money. High-quality batches can be found for NT$1,600 per 600 g, while machine-harvested summer teas can go as low as NT$350 per 600 g. Several key factors contribute to this accessible pricing:
1. Higher Yield per Unit Area: JinXuan tea bushes have stronger vitality, yielding about 50% more per unit area than Qingxin Oolong, and can be harvested up to 6 to 7 times a year. In contrast, Qingxin Oolong has a much lower yield. For the same acreage of tea plantation, JinXuan produces 2 to 3 times the annual harvest of Qingxin Oolong, and higher yields naturally translate to lower relative prices.
2. Lower Production Costs: JinXuan tea bushes are not only robust but also highly disease-resistant, with strong tolerance to both droughts and heavy rainfall. In terms of plantation management, irrigation, and fertilizer usage, the costs for JinXuan are far lower than those for Qingxin Oolong, which further drives down its price.
3. High Mechanical Harvesting Rate: JinXuan tea bushes are planted at a high density, making them well-suited for machine harvesting. Mechanical harvesting significantly reduces labor costs, making JinXuan tea much more budget-friendly.
4. Mostly grown in mid- to low-altitude regions: JinXuan tea is mostly distributed in mid- to low-altitude areas such as Mingjian Township and Zhushan Township in Nantou. Compared to high-altitude teas, the cultivation cost for mid- to low-altitude teas is significantly lower, giving JinXuan a strong price advantage.
Is JinXuan tea cheap, so its quality must be poor?
Not necessarily. The main reasons for JinXuan’s affordable price are its high yield and low production cost, which do not directly correlate with lower quality. There are also high-quality JinXuan teas on the market, such as high-mountain JinXuan grown at an altitude of 1,900 meters or competition-grade JinXuan, which can sell for several thousand NT$ per 600 g.
