Wudong Dancong Tea (also written as 烏崬) is the top-tier representative of Phoenix Dancong teas, highly favored by tea enthusiasts for its unique floral aroma and high-mountain character. This tea originates from Wudong Mountain in Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province. Blessed with high altitude and a unique natural environment, this mountain range nurtures tea leaves of exceptional quality. Among local teas, Wudong Milanxiang is the most expensive and serves as the representative tea variety of Wudong Mountain.
Origin of Wudong Dancong Tea
Wudong Mountain is located in Fenghuang Town, Chaozhou City, standing at an elevation of 1,391 meters as the second-highest peak in the Fenghuang Mountain range. With its cool climate and mist-shrouded tea plantations built along the mountain slopes, it resembles a tranquil paradise. In the early morning, a gentle mist often envelops the mountains, providing a natural shield and nourishment for the tea trees. The unique highland microclimate and mineral-rich soil create an exceptional growing environment for Wudong Dancong tea, making it the premier production area for Fenghuang Dancong. Wudong Mountain holds a status in Fenghuang Dancong comparable to that of Lishan tea among Taiwan’s high mountain teas.
In addition to common terrace-farmed teas, the area is home to numerous old tea trees standing 2 to 3 meters tall, requiring ladders for harvesting. It is said that many of the old bushes on Wudong Mountain are over 300 years old, yielding a rich, full-bodied flavor with a distinct high-mountain character. Alongside these ancient trees, the region features many varieties encompassing the ten major aroma profiles—such as Almond Aroma, Huangzhi (Gardenia) Aroma, Zhilan (Orchid) Aroma, Milan (Honey Orchid) Aroma, Cinnamon Aroma, and Dayeh (Big Leaf)—with Milan Dancong being the most popular among them.
Appearance
Wudong Dancong tea possesses a distinct aesthetic, featuring tightly twisted, robust tea leaves with a deep, glossy color. The leaves are about 1 to 2 cm long with plump buds and thick leaves. Hand-crafted with meticulous rolling, they retain their natural form and display a gracefully curled shape. These characteristics make Wudong Dancong stand out among various Dancong teas, showcasing its unique visual appeal.
Flavor Profile
Wudong Dancong tea is exceptionally distinctive in flavor. The golden, bright tea liquor offers a mellow and smooth mouthfeel, accompanied by subtle floral notes—most notably represented by Wudong Milan and Almond aromas. These floral and tea notes intertwine harmoniously with the unique high-mountain character of Wudong Mountain, delivering rich layers that leave a lingering impression. The signature sweetness of high mountain tea stays in the mouth for a long time, encouraging saliva production after sipping.
