Rougui tea is a tea tree variety originally named Yugui. Wuyi Rock Tea Rougui features tightly twisted strips, a dark and lustrous appearance, and a pungent, cinnamon-like aroma. Because its aroma resembles cinnamon, it is commonly referred to simply as Rougui tea. Rougui is considered one of the highest-quality varieties among rock teas.
Wuyi Rougui Tea: "Unmatched in Aroma by Any Other"
Wuyi Rock Teas have always been best known and most popular for three varieties: Dahongpao, Shuixian, and Rougui. Among them, Rougui is characterized by its exceptionally distinct aroma, leading to the saying, “Shuixian cannot match its mellow depth, and Rougui cannot match its fragrance,” which highlights its superior aromatic qualities. Some describe the aroma of Wuyi Rock Tea Rougui as carrying caramel notes, with a powerful, dominant fragrance that rushes to the top of the lid—truly unique.
In addition to its fragrance, Rougui Wuyi Rock Tea boasts a pronounced “rock rhyme” (yan yun), a rich, mellow taste, and a concentrated flavor without any bitterness. Thanks to these appealing qualities, the production of Rougui Wuyi Rock Tea has steadily increased, making it the most popular Wuyi Rock Tea variety in recent years. Among the highest-priced Wuyi Rock Teas, “Niurou” (Niulan Keng Rougui) and “Marou” (Matouyan Rougui) are the most famous. The finest Niulan Keng Rougui can fetch over one hundred thousand RMB per 500 g, which is astonishing.
Characteristics of Rougui Tea
Wuyi Rougui not only possesses the unique flavor profile characteristic of rock teas but is also widely loved for its pungent, long-lasting, and distinctive aroma. According to tea experts, Rougui tea emits a clear cinnamon fragrance, with premium batches carrying a subtle milky undertone. Even after multiple steepings, the aroma lingers and refuses to fade. The liquor is smooth and mellow on the palate, with a noticeable sweet aftertaste that leaves the mouth fragrant long after drinking. The tea liquor is a clear, bright orange-yellow; the wet leaves are yellowish and bright with distinct red spots, showcasing the classic “green leaves with red edges” feature. The dried leaves are evenly twisted and tight, brownish-green in color, oily and glossy, with tiny white frog-skin-like spots on the backs of some leaves.
Visually, the strands of Rougui tea are evenly curled, brownish-green in color, oily, and lustrous. The dry leaves carry a sweet aroma, while the brewed liquor releases a charming scent reminiscent of cream, flowers, fruits, and cinnamon. The liquor is mellow and sweet-tasting on the entry, with a lingering finish, a clear orange-yellow color, and evenly bright wet leaves that are pale green framed with red edges. Even after six to seven steepings, you can still experience its rich “rock rhyme” and Rougui aroma.
