What Happens If You Drink Too Much Black Tea

Customer Inquiry: Hello. I bought 1.8 kg of your Honey Black Tea last month, and it is simply delicious. For the past two weeks, I’ve been drinking over a dozen cups a day, and I even bring some to work to brew. A colleague told me that you shouldn’t drink too much black tea because it’s bad for your health. Is there any truth to what happens if you drink too much black tea?

Chang Hsing Tea: Hello Ms. Yu, thank you for loving our Honey Black Tea. Just like with any food or beverage, too much or too little can have a negative impact on the body, and black tea is no exception. Drinking too much black tea first brings up the issue of excessive caffeine intake. A 150 ml cup of black tea contains about 35 mg of caffeine, and the recommended daily limit for caffeine is no more than 300 mg. Ten cups of black tea would likely exceed that 300 mg threshold.

Excessive caffeine can easily lead to irritability, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushing, increased urination, gastrointestinal upset, and other issues.

▲ Black tea itself is low in calories, but adding too much sugar syrup or milk can easily cause your calorie intake to exceed limits.

Additionally, if you add sweeteners like sugar syrup, milk, or other flavorings to your black tea, you may also run into problems with excessive calories. For a typical commercial black tea’s sweetness level, a single cup can contain 200 calories. If you add milk, it also adds about 100 calories. Consuming excessive calories over the long term can easily increase the risk of weight gain. For your health, we recommend reducing your black tea intake or switching to other beverages, such as green tea or oolong tea, which have lower caffeine content. Try not to let drinking too much black tea become a burden on your health.
