Shuixian tea is primarily cultivated in regions such as Jianyang, Fujian, Jian’ou, and Yongchun. With a distinct main trunk, sparse branching, a large canopy, and thick leaves, its tea plant is suitable for making black and green tea, and even better suited for oolong tea. It is also an excellent varietal for rock tea (Yancha). Second in popularity only to Rougui tea, the finest Huiyuankeng Shuixian tea commands a price of over RMB 3,000 per 500g.

Origins of Shuixian Tea

Legend has it that during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, a traveler from Fujian discovered a large tea plant growing next to a temple. Constricted by the temple walls over a long period, the tree grew with several twisted and deformed branches. Finding the unique shape of these curving branches fascinating, the traveler dug up the entire tea plant and brought it home to cultivate. Skillfully utilizing this special form, he carefully nurtured it and eventually produced a premium tea with a clear, delightful fragrance. Because “shui” (water) sounds like “mei” (beautiful) in Southern Min dialect, the tea harvested from this beautiful fairy mountain was named “Shuixian” (Narcissus/Water Fairy).

Wuyi Shuixian Tea, Renowned for Its Mellow Depth

“Fragrance cannot surpass Rougui, mellowness cannot surpass Shuixian, and rhyme cannot surpass Dahongpao.” Shuixian not only boasts exceptional rock rhyme (yanyun), but the resulting Shuixian rock tea is also characterized by an intensely mellow flavor. This has made it one of the most sought-after tea plants in the Wuyi region in recent years, with Wuyi Shuixian rock tea trailing only Rougui in price, sometimes even surpassing Dahongpao.

The absolute pinnacle of Wuyi Shuixian is “Old Bush Shuixian” (Laocong Shuixian), made from tea trees aged 50 years or older. Because of its mellow taste and distinct orchid fragrance, Laocong Shuixian is highly favored in the market. Due to its scarcity, exceptional taste, and excellent aging potential, Laocong Shuixian has become a coveted collector’s item among tea enthusiasts. The older the tea trees used, the higher the collection value. Wuyi Huiyuankeng even features 80-year-old Shuixian tea priced at over tens of thousands of RMB per 500g—truly staggering.
