This is a heavy-roasted Dong Ding Oolong tea. After the initial processing, the tea leaves undergo an additional low-temperature roasting process lasting approximately 24 hours in total. This process imparts a captivating, toasted aroma to the tea and gives it a richer, more robust flavor profile.
Rich-Aroma Heavy-Roasted Oolong Tea
The philosophy behind heavy-roasted Oolong is to enhance the depth of flavor and eliminate excess astringency, resulting in a smoother, rounder, and more enjoyable brew. However, roasting tea leaves requires precision control. If time and temperature fluctuate even slightly, the flavor can easily go off—or at worst, ruin the entire batch. Since each batch requires roasting at least 18 kilograms at once, less experienced tea masters wouldn’t even dare to try. Because of high production costs, lengthy processing times, and a preference among younger tea drinkers (aged 20–30) for unroasted Oolong, fewer and fewer people have been willing to make heavy-roasted Oolong in recent years.
Since it wasn’t a traditional mainstream choice, we relied on a custom-order model in past years—roasting a batch only when enough requests accumulated to reach the 18-kilogram threshold. In recent years, however, heavy-roasted Oolong has begun gaining popularity again. With growing, steady demand, we decided to officially add it to our retail lineup. We produced a total of 108 kilograms this year, with both the delicacy of the tea soup and the lingering throat sweetness (hou yun) elevated to a whole new level. True connoisseurs who appreciate roasted teas will recognize the quality with their first sip.
Featuring a toasted aroma and a rich, intense flavor, this heavy-roasted Dong Ding Oolong tea is something lovers of robust, mellow tea profiles won’t want to miss.
